7 tips for organizing your wardrobe

Knowing how to properly organize your closet is an art that can save you time and peace of mind. Whether your closet is large or small, the key is to make it functional and practical. Here's a few storage tips to get you there.

1. Take an inventory of your clothes.

First of all, before you even consider how much space you have, you need to sort it out. Take out all the clothes in your closet, then sort them into two piles : clothes to keep and clothes to donate.

Next, store out-of-season items in plastic bins in the basement or, if space is limited, in vacuum bags. These take up much less space than bins and can be easily stored in a closet or under the bed.

Tip :
To identify which clothes to donate, turn your hangers as you put on your pieces. At the end of the year, the unturned hangers are the items you will not have worn and could donate.

2. Plan smart.

Once you've taken inventory, it's time to assess the space you have. Here are some tips for planning your spaces :

  • Use your drawers to store all your folded clothes.

  • Use your shelves to fill them with storage boxes.
  • Divide your closet by using a shelf to create more space.
  • Consider having 2 clothing poles, affixed one under the other, to double the number of short clothes to hang
  • Add high shelves to store bulky items, such as comforters and pillows, or off-season clothing.
  • Divide your closet with a column of drawers, very useful for storing all the small items like lingerie, ties, belts and accessories.
  • Put hooks on unused walls to hang your scarves and necklaces.

The goal is to find smart ways to maximize your space by dividing up your closet sections. Make sure you use every inch of space available.

3. Group your clothes by category.

Once you've assessed the space available in your closet, it's time to compartmentalize. To start, group your pants, skirts, dresses, long-sleeved shirts, short-sleeved sweaters, etc. together. This classification will help you save time in the morning.

Also consider organizing your clothes according to color or use, to bring even more order to your wardrobe.

4. Organize your clothes in the closet.

Next, it's time to place your clothes in your closet. Place your clothes in order of length and make sure each garment has enough space to hang freely. You can also choose to hang your jeans or t-shirts if space allows.

Finally, fold the rest of your clothes efficiently, so that they can easily find their place in your drawers and shelves. A good way to do this is to fold your clothes vertically, using the Marie Kondo method. This method allows you to fit more clothes in the same space while still allowing you to see everything at a glance. To learn more about this method, click here.

Shoes : If you have enough space, you can easily place your shoes in a section equipped with racks or shoe shelves. However, if you are short on space, you can put some of your shoes in boxes and simply stack them in a closet section or other storage space.
Accessories : Your closet can also be used to store your accessories and jewelry. For jewelry, use a drawer that you can divide up using storage compartments. For your hats, low shelves are a great place for easy access storage.

6. Allow space for a mirror.

A wardrobe is not complete without a nice fitted mirror. For classic wardrobes, opt for a mirror that is built into the length of the closet. If your space allows, you can also choose to hang your mirror on a wall.
